La Secca del Papa - The Pope Shoal LOCATION: Tavolara (North Eastern Sardinia) The diving spot is about 300 metres far away from the east of Punta del papa which is located at the eastern extremity of the Tavolara isle. DIFFICULTY: Medium/high MAXIMUM DEPTH: 35 metres CURRENT: Always present, sometime strong ANCHORAGE: Difficult This is the most famous dive in the Protected Sea Area of Tavolara. The anchorage is sometimes difficult and it would be wise finding the lowest spot with the echo sounder. It's also advisable to descend and to position the anchor manually, as to avoid damaging the variety of red gorgonia situated along the walls of the shoal. The seabed is an imposing granite structure, that reaches a height of 18 metres and a depth of 42 metres. The rock is constantly interrupted by cracks of different sizes. Groupers of all dimensions, barracudas, dentexes, almaco jacks, brown meagres, morays and white seabreams slowly dance around the shoal. Here you can find the Paramuricea Clavata, very rare on the coasts of Sardinia, characterized by yellow and red colours, which makes this spot even more beautiful. Parco Marino di Tavolara. This small island has a so particular form that seems to change its aspects according to the different point from where you can see it. The facts that two thirds parts of the island are forbidden to visitors and its peaks are reachable with difficult have allowed the conservation of some rare botanic species, like the Alyssum Tavolara, some kinds of limonium, maples and elicrisum. Parazoantos and Dromia Personata (sponge crabs) are indiscreet spectators of your dive, that goes on until the break in the Portone, a beautiful cave that slowly narrows and which is always full of lobsters and cylinder anemones. At around - 20 metres you find the first cave: The Bubble. Making sure not to raise any sand, you can observe beautiful species of shellfish, like the Stenophus Spinosus, the Galathea Strigosa and the Herbstia Condylatia. Slowly start to ascend inside the cave towards an air bubble, that gives its name to the cave. After having admired the amazing stalactites, take a look at all the shrimps, lobsters and slipper lobsters and then you can leave the cave satisfied. Now you can move towards the second cave: The Siphon. Don't be scared by its name, it's only due to its "S" shape. That's why its entrance is quite narrow. Once inside you can slowly lean on the sea bed of white pebbles, to admire all the shellfish and shadefish. You can now ascend and finish this unforgettable dive. The Thalassa Wreck LOCATION: Capo Figari (North Eastern Sardinia) Capo Figari is a huge limestone massif DIFFICULTY: Hard MAXIMUM DEPTH: -45 metres CURRENT: Weak ANCHORAGE: Easy This is the wreck of a small flat-bottomed barge, sunk in 1985. The boat rests on a sandy sea bed at -45 metres and it is broken into two stumps. The main difficulty of this dive is due to the high depths, but the most perienced divers will know immediately how worthy it was. The underwater seascape is rich in many invertebrates, alcionaria, lobsters, sea scorpions, goldfishes, big picarels, cod fishes, colourful sea slugs and conger eels. The Canyons LOCATION: Capo Figari (North Eastern Sardinia) Capo Figari is a huge limestone massif. The dive is along its south eastern wall. DIFFICULTY: Easy MAXIMUM DEPTH: 35/40 metres CURRENT: Sometime sustained ANCHORAGE: Easy The dive is already interesting after only few metres depth. Slowly you reach a small canyon at - 30 metres. It's an unmissable sight, with mushroom shaped coral formations that come out of an enchanting sea bed of white sand. Lobsters, morays, rocklings and sea slugs are constant and unfailing companions that will guide you to a treasure of history: at -36 metres depth there are some anchors of the Byzantine era in an excellent state of preservation. Snorkeling in Tavolara Island Snorkeling Full Day in the Marine Protected Area of Tavolara Isola Tavolara The boat will depart from the Marina di Olbia, or from the Brin pier, right in the city centre, a place with ample free parking space. After about 30 minutes by boat, after passing the lighthouse at the entrance of the harbour, we will coast the granite promontory of Capo Ceraso and enter in the Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area. There will be two stops for norkelling, choosing among several options depending on sea conditions. Among the most interesting sites, surely the wreck of Chrisso, a Cypriot-flagged cargo ship sunk in 1974, with its bow and stern emerging from the water from a depth of about 6 metres. Around the ship a large amount of fish concentrates, living permanently there. The site of Piscine di Molara (Molara Pools), close to the homonymous island, for those who enjoy the crystal clear waters typical of our coasts. For the adventurous, instead, we propose a visit to the seabed beneath the imposing limestone cliffs of Tavolara Island, offering a fascinating scenery thanks to the large amounts of fish and the always-excellent visibility. At the end of the two stops for snorkelling we will land to Tavolara for lunch, where we'll spend a few hours under the majestic outline of the "Kings"Island... The island has two restaurants, a snack bar and toilet facilities. An information point of the Marine Protected Area, which offers various tourist services, is also present on the island. For those wishing to further enjoy the charm of Tavolara, there are two short nature trails, the Sentiero del Prolago (Prolagus trail), dotted with explanatory placards, and the Sentiero della Mandria, (Herd's trail). Each can be completed in about one hour. Before returning to Olbia, we'll stop for snorkelling in the charming bays of Capo Ceraso, sheltered from the Scirocco winds. Snorkeling equipment (fins, mask and wetsuit shorts) and practical guides for the recognition of marine species are always available on board.
